Material Handling / Lifting System: DC-Powered Actuator for Autonomous Material Handling Vehicle

Challenge

An OEM of automated material handling equipment was looking for a non-hydraulic lifting actuator solution for an autonomous material handling vehicle. They ruled out using electro-mechanical actuators due to their finite life. The OEM had several key design requirements for the new actuation system:

  • The actuator must provide a minimum of 1,850 Lbs. of force at a speed of 7 in/sec using 48 VDC and a stroke length of 24”.
  • Needs to be an energy-efficient DC-powered actuator to maximize operational time between charges.
  • Must reduce the space needed for the actuation system and reduce the weight.
  • A complete solution was required, including the actuator, cables, and driver/controller.

Kyntronics Solution

  •  Parallel configuration 48 VDC linear actuators with drives and controllers mounted to a backplate “Total Solution”.
  • CANBus Interface to the AGV controller.
  • Incorporation of AGV Safety Circuits.

Customer Benefits

  • Highly energy-efficient yet powerful actuators extended AGV battery life.
  • Extended life vs. an electro-mechanical actuator.
  • Compact solution that fits into the forklift design.

Application Requirements

Stroke: 24″
Speed: 5.1 in/sec
Force: 2,000 lbf.
