Water/Wastewater Valve Actuator: Hybrid Linear Actuator with Fail-Safe Protection Replaced Troublesome Hydraulic System

Challenge

A utility customer was using hydraulics to actuate a large water/wastewater valve. They were experiencing excessive leaks and high maintenance with the HPU and hydraulic cylinder actuators and were looking for a more reliable alternative. The application also required a failure-safe device as a backup in case of a power failure. They considered an electro-mechanical actuator but determined it was not robust enough for the shock loads inherent with this application.

Kyntronics Solution

  • Hybrid electro-hydraulic valve actuator with position and force feedback configured for Rockwell Automation servo motors and drives.
  • Integrated fail-safe module with extended speed of .2 in/sec to extend the rod in case of power loss.
  • Application-specific internal valving within the manifold.
  • Kyntronics supplied an actuator, reservoir, and nitrogen-filled fail-safe module.
