Lifting and Positioning: Roll Handling Lifting System with Synchronized Actuators Positioned within 0.050” Accuracy

Challenge

A Roll Handling machine OEM required a pair of synchronized lifting actuators for their roll handling equipment that could be controlled to within 0.050” positional accuracy while positioning very heavy rolls of material. The end user had issues with an existing hydraulic cylinder actuator system that was having a difficult time synchronizing two units used to guide a roll while maintaining tension on the material.

Kyntronics Solution

  • Two “Total Solution” high-force electric linear actuators (one per side of the roll handler) with synchronized operation. The system included the actuator, motor, cables, and control system in an enclosure, factory tested and tuned.
  • Linear actuator with force and position feedback using servo control.

  • Replaced the HPU and hydraulic cylinders while providing synchronized position control and adequate force to lift the heavy rolls.
  • Easy retrofit to an existing machine with minor modifications.
  • Precise synchronization +/-0.050in
