Glulam Beam Press: 55 Hybrid Linear Actuators with Programmable Position, Force and Dwell Hold Time

Challenge

A fabricated lumber products manufacturer launched a project to build automated presses to produce glulam and LVL structural lumber components. Traditionally, these types of presses used large HPUs and hydraulic cylinder actuators; however, they were concerned that hydraulics had many disadvantages, including high energy consumption, excessive maintenance, and leaks that caused product spoilage and downtime.

For this project, the manufacturer wanted to use electric servo actuators on both the vertical pressing and horizontal material alignment mechanisms. Key project objectives included: automating the press operation to improve productivity, saving energy, eliminating hydraulic fluid replenishment and disposal costs, reducing maintenance, and improving facility safety and ergonomics. In addition, the plant was having trouble finding skilled hydraulic maintenance personnel and wanted to incorporate actuation technology that could be serviced by their electricians.

The project required high-force actuators that produced up to 75,000 lbs. of force per actuator. The control system needed to be programmable to produce different end products and be able to sequence and synchronize the operation of 55 total actuators with programmable position and force control and dwell hold time.

Kyntronics Solution

  • The system included 55 – “Total Solution” hybrid synchronized electric linear servo actuators rated from 10,000 lbs. to 75,000 lbs. of force. Also included were 5 – floor-standing control cabinets for the servo drives and controls, all field cabling, and the complete system factory, tuned and tested.
  • Fully programmable, independent servo control of position and force, along with press force dwell hold time for each actuator.
  • Programmable sequenced and synchronized operation of each actuator that allowed automated recipe-driven flexibility to accommodate variable beam lengths, thicknesses and material types.
  • Power-on-demand operation

Customer Benefits

  • Achieved the customer’s goal of eliminating hydraulics, resulting in significant operating cost reduction by eliminating hydraulic fluid disposal and replenishment, energy savings, lower maintenance, and reduced product spoilage risk.
  • The control system provided the features and flexibility to substantially automate glulam production, increasing productivity and improving quality of the press process in addition to capturing cycle data for product documentation and process diagnostics.
  • Robust servo actuators that can handle long-duration hold times at high forces, and shock loading without damage.
  • Fully programmable to accurately produce a wide range of LVL and glulam products.
  • Serviceable by their electricians.
