Pressure Valve Testing: Requiring Precise Force Control of Clamping and Holding Actuators for Pressure Testing

Challenge

A gas meter manufacturer needed a versatile linear actuation solution to clamp and hold gas meter housings for pressure testing. They required two clamping actuators per fixture to apply the proper force to seal the housing for pressurization without deforming or damaging it. They determined that hydraulic cylinders, or electro- mechanical actuators, could not be used on this clamping system due to the precise force control required and the concentrated loads that the actuators would experience.

Kyntronics Solution

  • Two pairs of Kyntronics, “Total Solution” electric linear actuators with force feedback, along with drives mounted to backplates.
  • Each pair of actuators was synchronized to clamp onto the test specimen at a precise force.
  • The system used Ethernet IP for communications with the customer’s control system.
