Rubber Molding and Assembly Press: Upgrading Existing Machines to Improve Process Control and Energy Efficiency

Challenge

An electrical power transmission component manufacturer wanted to upgrade several existing rubber molding and assembly press machines. They were having downtime issues with their existing hydraulic cylinders and wanted to eliminate hydraulic leaks by using electric actuators. In addition, they wanted actuators that would improve energy efficiency. They also wanted to free up floor space that the HPU was using on their manufacturing floor and improve process control.

Kyntronics Solution

  • Electric linear actuators with position and force feedback for the assembly, molding, clamping and die-set stations.
  • Actuators used Rockwell Automation motors and drives and Kyntronics AOI.

Customer Benefit

  • Environmentally friendly, sustainable solution
  • Simplified maintenance by standardizing two motor part numbers for all the actuators,
  • Improved part quality by identifying incorrect crimps using position and force control.
  • Reduced operating costs by eliminating hydraulic fluid disposal and replenishment, energy savings and lower maintenance.

Application Requirements

Stroke: 3” – 10”
Speed: 1 in/sec
Force: 5,700 – 23,000 lbf.
