Metal Forming Coining and Piercing Press: High Force Electric Actuators Providing Position and Force Feedback

Challenge

A machine builder was tasked to develop a new metal forming coining press with piercing operations for an appliance manufacturer. The customer specified “no hydraulics”, but the machines needed to handle the force requirements and shock loads inherent in the coining and piercing operations. They required high force electric, servo-controlled actuators to perform the coining press function and achieve the quality standards required for the parts that would be produced on this machine. With shock loads being a factor, electro-mechanical actuators were ruled out.

Kyntronics Solution

  • High force electric linear actuators with position and force feedback and servo control of position and force.
  • Actuators used Rockwell Automation motors and drives with Kyntronics AOI.

Customer Benefits

  • Elimination of the hydraulics on the new machine resulted in an environment that is cleaner, less noisy, more energy efficient and requires far less maintenance.
  • Actuators that can handle shock loading without damage reduce maintenance and downtime risk.
  • Actuators used a parallel configuration providing the force required in the available space.
  • Low maintenance, cost-effective solution for the machine builder.

Application Requirements

Stroke: 4”
Speed: 1.1 in/sec
Force: 58,000 lbf.
