Sawmill Planer Head Lifting System: Hybrid Actuator Eliminated Leaky Hydraulics that Spoiled Finished Lumber Product

Challenge

A machine builder of lumber processing equipment had a mill customer who wanted to eliminate hydraulics from a chip head positioner due to hydraulic leaks that were spoiling the finished lumber product. They also wanted to improve the positioning accuracy of the chip head. An electro-mechanical actuator would not work due to the high forces and shock loading of this environment. They required a lifting actuator that was both precise and shock load tolerant.

  • “Total Solution” electric linear actuator. The system included the actuator, motor, cables, and control system in an enclosure, factory tested and tuned.
  • Linear actuator with force and position feedback using servo control.
  • Position feedback – monitors the machine to detect abnormal wear.
