Rocket Nozzle Test System Powered by Kyntronics Servo Power Units

Challenge

A manufacturer of rocket motors needed to develop a rocket motor test system capable of simulating the extreme stress conditions rocket engine nozzles experience during launch. The solution required high-frequency response with coordinated motion across both X and Y axes, achieving 0.010” position accuracy. It also needed to accommodate varying stroke lengths, forces, and frequency ranges to test different rocket nozzles, while integrating seamlessly with the master test host system via Modbus TCP/IP for a fully programmable testing environment.

Kyntronics Solution

  • Deployed 2 special-configuration dual Servo Power Unit (SPU) systems, each connected to a single cylinder—one for the X-axis and one for the Y-axis—to achieve coordinated X-Y motion.
  • The dual Servo Power Unit system provided additional flow capacity for higher-speed actuation, enabling precise simulation of rocket nozzle stress testing.
  • Mounted position sensors on each cylinder for closed-loop position control, ensuring high-precision rocket engine nozzle simulation.
  • X and Y axis motion coordinated by the host test system using Modbus TCP/IP communications with Kyntronics SPU controllers.
  • Designed as a compact servo power unit solution for aerospace test applications, providing a small footprint while delivering high performance.

Customer Benefit

  • Achieved the rocket nozzle reliability and durability testing protocols with high positional accuracy.
  • Energy-efficient servo power unit solution reduced power consumption compared with traditional hydraulics through power-on-demand operation.
  • Environmentally friendly and sustainable design with minimal fluid usage, lowering maintenance requirements.
  • Flexible and programmable stroke, speed, and force allowed comprehensive testing of a wide range of rocket engine nozzles and configurations.
  • By standardizing integration with the rocket motor test system, repeatability and efficiency were enhanced for fatigue testing and broader test system operations.
