Welding Press: When Pneumatic Actuators, Electro-Mechanical Actuators, and Hydraulic Cylinder Actuators Aren't Doing the Job

Challenge

A truck manufacturer had issues with the pneumatic actuators used on their welding press, including a lack of control, poor force consistency, and air leaks. Shock loading was also a factor with previously used electro-mechanical actuators, and they did not want to use traditional hydraulic actuators . They required a servo-controlled welding press actuator that would clamp and hold the components being welded precisely and consistently.

Kyntronics Solution

  • Electric linear actuators with position and force feedback and servo control of position and force.
  • Actuators used an inline configuration to fit into an existing machine with minor modifications and incorporated an anti-rotation device.
  • Weld press Actuators that use Rockwell Automation servo motors and drives with Kyntronics AOI.

Customer Benefits

  • Moving to an electrically powered actuator eliminated the issues the customer was having with the pneumatic actuators previously used.
  • Actuators that can tolerate shock loading without damage, reducing maintenance and downtime risk.
  • Improved process control – using Position and Force control.
