The common challenges with actuators
While both hydraulic cylinders and screw-type electro-mechanical actuators have their advantages, they each experience challenges that can result in high maintenance costs, unplanned downtime and wasted resources. Hydraulic actuators operating on hydraulic power units (HPUs) require numerous components, including pumps, hoses, proportional valves, and filtration that require regular maintenance, develop hazardous leaks and are very inefficient.
Electro-Mechanical actuators have their disadvantages as well. They experience premature wear and the screws are easily damaged when exposed to shock loads resulting in poor reliability and high maintenance costs.
Kyntronics’ SHA–Combining the best of both worlds
The SHA is an all-electric actuation system that incorporates high-precision servo control coupled with an integral pump and hydraulic cylinder. The SHA uses a minimal amount of fluid, similar to the amount of lubrication used in a typical screw-type actuator or mechanical gearbox. The system is fully sealed, eliminating the risk of leaks like those that occur with hydraulic actuators and HPUs. This makes the product safer and reduces downtime.
However, the hydraulic cylinder in the SHA provides excellent shock load tolerance and can handle much higher forces than a traditional screw-type electro-mechanical actuators reducing the need for continual lubrication, preventative maintenance and ultimately costly screw replacement.
