Electric Hydraulic Cylinder

Electric hydraulic cylinders are a term often used to describe an electrically powered linear actuator that incorporates hydraulic fluid as the means to achieve linear motion. They are part of the family of electric cylinders that includes pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanically driven devices.

Kyntronics electric hydraulic cylinders are rugged industrial linear actuators that are servo controlled and used on applications requiring precise control and reliable, durable operation. They range from rated forces as low as 100 lbs (0.4 kN) up to rated forces of 150,000 lbs. (667 kN).

Kyntronics electro-hydraulic actuators aka electric hydraulic cylinders or electric hydraulic actuators are either AC or DC powered.  They are a linear actuator with a totally sealed design that incorporates an integral cylinder driven by an attached motor and pump operating on a closed circuit using a small volume of fluid that is not exposed to the environment, preventing contamination. The fluid does not require replenishment or replacement.

The linear motion produced by Kyntronics electro-hydraulic actuator is simple, the actuator extends the cylinder rod by the motor rotating the pump in one direction. Retracting the cylinder rod is accomplished by reversing the motor direction.  Kyntronics electrohydraulic actuators are often used to provide precise linear motion control. A position sensor or limit switches provide feedback to the programmable actuator controller to determine when the actuator motor starts and stops and can be controlled to precisely move to programmable positions.

For many applications, equipment builders traditionally had to choose between one of two major actuation types–electromechanical screw-type actuators or hydraulic cylinders powered by a hydraulic power unit. Both technologies offer high power and performance however each has their shortcomings requiring equipment manufacturers to accept compromises. Electromechanical screw-type actuation systems are fragile and experience premature failure due to metal-on-metal wear and are highly susceptible to shock load and side load damage. Repair and maintenance costs can be very high for these devices in the long run. Hydraulic cylinders require a complex assembly of pumps, hoses, valves, tanks, and filtration systems that require regular maintenance and will inevitably develop leaks causing unplanned downtime.

Kyntronics electric hydraulic cylinders are an excellent alternative to these traditional actuation choices. Our actuator eliminates the compromises equipment builders commonly face when choosing the correct actuator giving them access to the best features of both hydraulic and screw-type actuators. Kyntronics’ SMART electric hydraulic cylinder is an entirely sealed product, eliminating the risk of leaks and the need for the complex assembly of a hydraulics system. Due to its integral hydraulic cylinder, our SMART actuator isn’t affected by shock loads, producing the same control and large range of rated forces as traditional technologies with exacting precision.
