Long Stroke Actuation Systems for Engineering Excellence
One of the major advantages of Kyntronics’ Servo Electro-Hydraulic actuators is their versatility for use on a diverse range of applications. In addition to actuators for general purpose industrial and mobile use, we also design and manufacture long stroke actuators for robust solutions on applications requiring precise motion with a stroke length greater than 36”.
Long stroke actuator applications have traditionally used hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic cylinders, ball screws or other technologies such as belt driven slides or rod less cylinders. Each type has advantages and disadvantages depending on the application requirements for force, precision, speed, maintenance and cost.
Hydraulic cylinders typically provide the highest force of the various options. However, they have several disadvantages including high energy use, risk of leaks, fluid replacement / disposal costs, and high maintenance. Ball screw actuators must be sized large enough to avoid bending vibrations (screw whip) and are susceptible to shock loads that can damage the mechanism. Other options are generally used for lower force applications that do not require precise control.
Long-Stroke Actuation System Design Considerations
Long stroke actuator applications present unique challenges for machine designers to achieve a robust mechanism requiring minimal maintenance at a reasonable cost. Kyntronics works closely with our customers up front to configure the correct actuator for these requirements. In the case of long stroke applications, we incorporate features to increase the robustness of the actuator such as larger diameter cylinder rods, thicker cylinder tube walls, internal tube stops, greater rod bearing length, and larger tie rods. Our engineers perform the calculations specific to your application that ensure the actuator provides proper rod stiffness and reliability to prevent buckling during operation.
Servo Electro-Hydraulic Long Stroke Actuators
Kyntronics SMART Servo Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (SHA) are an alternative to the long stroke actuator technologies mentioned above. Kyntronics actuators provide the high force capability of traditional hydraulics but with far lower energy consumption, no hoses or leak risk, minimal maintenance and lower operating costs. Compared with ball screw actuators, the SHA is not susceptible to damage from shock loads and is more cost effective in higher force applications.
In addition to being a robust solution for pdf long stroke applications , the SHA provides precise control of position, force and speed making it an ideal actuator choice for long stroke applications.
