Linear Servo Actuators

Linear servo actuators are available in a variety of technologies. Some of the more popular ones include: electro-hydraulic actuators, electro-mechanical actuators and servo cylinders.

Linear servo actuators incorporate a servo motor and servo control system that provides its capability to precisely control position, force, speed and dwell provided the actuator used or machine itself has feedback sensors that can be interfaced into the linear servo control system.

Linear servo actuators, sometimes referred to as linear servos are known for their precise, programmable and repeatable movements, excellent for industrial machines and other related industrial applications that require high precision positioning and cycling.

Demand for linear servo actuators is ramping up across many industries due to increasing use of automation and other customer requirements that include:

• Desire to reduce energy usage through more precise actuation.
• Need to improve process quality and reduce scrap by more precisely controlling the position, force, speed and dwell of the actuation production cycle.
• Requirements to increase machine flexibility to produce a wider variety of parts through greater programmability.
• Need to reduce maintenance costs by using sensors and software to predict actuator and machine wear ahead of unplanned downtime.
• Need to reduce tooling expense and tooling repairs by more precisely controlling actuation stroke profile to prevent damage. This is of particular interest in press applications where tool wear occurs often and is expensive to correct.

Kyntronics electro-hydraulic actuators are a type of linear servo actuator. These actuators are robust, precise, and low maintenance. They are available as a Total Solution version that includes the actuator, servo motor and drive, programmable linear actuator controller and software. We also offer these actuators as an Actuator Only version that adapts to a customer-supplied motor, drive and controller.

Our electro-hydraulic linear actuators are available in a wide range of sizes:

• Force Range ratings: from <100 lbs. (0.4 kN) to 150,000 lbs. (667 kN)
• Speed: up to 34.5 in/s (877 mm/s)
• Stroke Length: any increment up to 120 in. (3,048 mm)
• Input Power: 24 – 80 VDC or 120 – 480 VAC

Kyntronics also offers a Servo Power Unit that connects to external hydraulic cylinders or rotary actuators supplied by Kyntronics or others. The servo power unit coupled with a hydraulic cylinder or rotary actuator effectively provides the same functionality as either a linear servo actuator, or rotary servo actuator.  With its compact size, the servo power unit can be located very close to the cylinder using short hoses and robust quick-connect fittings reducing the risk of leaks and efficiency losses.
