Challenge:

Kyntronics customer RMD Systems, was tasked with designing a large legged robotic platform, referred to as Autonomous Field Supply Vehicle (AFSV) for transporting sensitive payload on a military application.

The payload was over 2,000 lbs, and extremely sensitive to shock and vibration. RMD needed an actuator that was capable of providing high force in a small package. Additionally, the actuator needed to be rugged enough for outdoor use, power efficient, and tolerate high shock loading.

Solution:

RMD tested hydraulic actuators, electromechanical actuators (EMAs), and electro-hydraulic actuators during the design phase. A purely hydraulic solution was deemed too heavy and complex with the required hoses, tubing, and valves, while electromechanical actuators did not have the force density or the durability against shock loading required for the application.

The electro-hydraulic actuators from Kyntronics provided the force density and durability of a hydraulic solution, while also providing the low mass and ease of system integration characteristics of an EMA solution. Additionally, the valving inside the Kyntronics actuator allowed the actuators to hold a static load without consuming any power.

Results:

RMD successfully designed, built, and tested the AFSV in 20 months from project kickoff. Kyntronics provided three configurations of actuators based on the force and speed requirements of the specific leg joints (Coxa, Femur, and Tibia joints). The actuators were integrated with RMD’s gait engine control software that utilizes position and force feedback from the actuators to control the legs and the body of the vehicle. The system has demonstrated omni-directional walking, six DOF body control, and operation on various terrain types while carrying a simulated payload.

Application: Electro-Hydraulic Power Unit for use with Customer Cylinders

Product: Servo Power Units

Challenge:

The customer required a Servo Power Unit that would attach to their existing cylinders and that needed several special features:

  • Required to provide 85,000 lbf @ 7 inches/sec. Approximately 130 HP
  • Ability to manually operate the cylinder in the event of a power outage
  • Ability to service one or more Servo Power Units while keeping the system in operation
  • Synchronized speed across both of the 5-SPU banks

Solution:

A special configuration of Kyntronics Servo Power Unit was provided that included:

  • Two – 5-Servo Power Unit banks
  • Control Panel with 10 servo drives to operate the two 5-SPU banks
  • Control Panel with HMI operator Interface
  • Servo drive and HMI software developed by Kyntronics
  • Manual back-up power unit on each 5-SPU bank for manual operation in the event of power loss
  • Capability to service one or more Servo Power Units without taking the system out of service
  • Synchronized speed across each of the 5-SPU banks

Challenge:

Halley Orthopedics an innovator in pre and post operative therapy machines for knee replacement patients had a critical project to implement a number of improvements in their next generation therapy machine in development.

Key objectives of the project included:

  • Portability:
    • The new generation X10 machine needed to weigh significantly less to make it portable. The previous actuation system weighed over 80 lbs.
    • Portability would significantly open the market for the X10.
  • Special sequencing and control features:
    • Incorporation of new safety features in the actuator to prevent over-travel.
    • Real-time communications with the patient for therapy settings and recording of leg travel.

Kyntronics Solution:

Kyntronics worked closely with X10 Therapy Engineers during the design phase to develop and configure a rotary actuator that would meet these requirements for their next generation machine.

The new system incorporated Kyntronics Electro-Mechanical SMART Actuator, a modified model R2400 which provided 2,400 in-lbs of torque capability. Using Kyntronics standard actuator building blocks, this modified actuator was configured to be compact and lightweight… only 8 lbs. compared with the previous competitor’s model that weighted over 80 lbs.

An innovative mechanical gear arrangement was also incorporated that prevented over-travel and provided an additional measure of safety for the patient. In addition, a Modbus communications interface to the patient graphical controller was provided along with special software that met all requirements the new X10 design needed for the next generation machine.

Results:

The Kyntronics SMART Hydraulic Actuator (SHA) combines the power of hydraulics with the precision of servo control resulting in an actuation system that exceeded the Couch OEM’s force requirements while fitting into the constrained space available in the Couch mechanism. The SHAs quiet operation and compact packaging allowed the new Couch design to be used in field retrofits increasing the market opportunity for this OEM customer.

A military customer needed a long stroke lifting actuator to replace hydraulics on a console lifting system for a shipboard application. They required a manual backup operation feature and reliable operation over a wide temperature range. The controls needed to be packaged in a stainless-steel enclosure with an HMI and software.
